What to prioritise
- Shoes first - Non‑marking soles, strong lateral support and a herringbone or mixed‑pattern outsole for turf/indoor courts. This is the single most important purchase.
Clay tennis shoes are a good alternative to padel-specific footwear.
Quick checklist
- Shoes - Non‑marking, lateral support, herringbone/mixed sole. Bring a spare pair of casual trainers/sandals to extend the life of your padel shoes whilst ventilating your feet!
- Top - Moisture‑wicking tee or base layer. Merino, polyester or nylon are recommended over cotton, which absorbs moisture and holds onto it like a sponge.
- Bottoms - Shorts/skirt/leggings with stretch and pockets for balls.
Pockets are important as you don’t want to hold a ball in your spare hand whilst serving. - Layers – Light zip‑up or windproof jacket for UK weather, potentially leggings too!
This obviously depends on the season and/or whether you are playing inside or outside. - Socks – Differing thickness, material, non-slip and other functionality.
Don’t underestimate your choice of sock if you are suffering from blisters etc. - Accessories - Insoles, wristband, cap/visor, towel!
